Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a French/Russian artist of Belarusian Jewish descent. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in virtually every artistic format, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. Chagall’s masterful use of colour set him aside from his peers. He was unrivalled in his ability to give a vivid impression of explosive movement with the simplest use of colour. Thematically, his works typically portrayed the worlds of lovers, musicians and artists in a fantasised, magic-realism setting.
