Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a Spanish artist, draftsman and sculptor best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. Dali was highly imaginative and enjoyed indulging in unusual and grandiose behaviour which sometimes drew more attention than his artwork, to the dismay of those who held his work in high esteem, and to the irritation of his critics. Dali was a pivotal figure in the Surrealist movement and symbolism was a very prominent tenant of his output. His hallmark “melting watches” portrayed Dali’s views that time is relative, not fixed. Animals, such as elephants, butterflies and horses were commonly recurring themes in his works too.
